Action ► Root—nervine tonic and diaphoretic; used in debility and fevers. Decoction given as a demulcent in irritability of bladder and genitourinary tract. Leaves—demulcent and refrigerant; used for scalding urine.
The root contains alkaloids—beta-phenethylamine, ephedrine, si-ephed-rine, vasicinol, vasicinone, vasicine, choline, hypaphorine, methyl ester, hy-paphorine andbetaine. These alkaloids are present in aerial parts as well.
Ethanolic extract of the plant exhibits hypoglycaemic activity. It depressed the normal blood pressure and lowered the activity of smooth muscles of the ileum of experimental animals.
