Understanding Plant Diseases
Several kinds of organisms cause diseases in plants, just as they do in people. Viruses are the toughest ones because they're incurable; all you can do is try to prevent them. Bacteria are nearly impossible to eliminate, too, after the plant is infected. Fortunately, fungi cause most plant diseases, and effective control chemicals are available, although prevention is still the best course of action.
The following sections give you an overview of diseases caused by pathogens — bacteria, fungi, viruses — and the ways you can prevent and control them. Later in the chapter, I describe specific diseases and environmental conditions that can mimic disease symptoms.
